The Environmental and Education Center

The Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mt. Kisco, NY recently opened up the brand new Environmental and Education Center (EEC). It is a great success, hosting learning and experiential events for children. Problem was, there was no where for them to eat lunch comfortably…until now

As a candidate for the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Rank, I am just about done with my service project and that is to build a picnic area for kids and their parents to hang out, eat, and talk about out the cool things the learned in the EEC.

Bureaucratic Challenges Overcome

Before one can start an Eagle Service Project, they need a beneficiary, a project, and get the regional Boy Scout Council to approve that project. I had to get two projects approved!

The first project was approved but unfortunately, the beneficiary had to back out of it due to apparent Board of Directors drama. I had to quickly adjust and, fortunately, the Westmoreland Sanctuary was very quick and efficient in providing a challenge for me to solve.

Work Efffort

My fellow scouts and I cleared out a wide area of land and bounded it with retaining curbs of natural (found) logs. Then, two truckloads of wood chips were delivered which we spread out to help level the land. To that, we are adding benches and picnic tables, which I convinced my high school engineering club to take on as a project.

In Appreciation

A big thanks goes out to many:

  • Lowe’s Home Improvement in Yorktown Heights, NY for the steep steep discounts on wood and hardware

  • Byram Hills High School Engineering Club for building the benches and picnic tables

  • Troop 94 Armonk Scouts for volunteering to work

  • Troop 94 Armonk leadership for their mentorship
